PRAHA (PRAGUE)

I just arrived in Vienna, Austria this afternoon from Prague (Praha), Czech Republic and will be here until Thursday when I will head further south to Italy.

On the train trip to the Czech Republic from Germany there was an obvious visual difference between the countries. Beside slight differences in the architecture, most of the smaller villages were less kept up and looked a little worn and drab. Nothing a little paint couldn't fix, but it's expected after many years of communism. The Czech countryside was gorgeous as the trees are just turning and the colors were great... I also enjoyed seeing deer and pheasants in the fields.

Praha is incredibly beautiful with ornate architecture and the buildings in the Old Town all have colorful facades. I met up again with Mike (classmate of my mom's from high school) and his girlfriend Lucy and we had a great time visiting the Czech beer halls and seing the Old Town and Jewish Quarter illuminated at night.

We visited U'Flecku, the oldest beer hall and brewery in Praha (established 1200) and had a great time listening to the live Czech music and tasting the dark czech beer and Silvovitz (brandy). The Pilsner style of beer was created in Pilzen, Czech Republic so this syle of beer is popular in Praha and the country, plus other favorites such as Pilsner Urquell and other very good dark beers. Mike introduced me to a beer mixture that is half dark beer, half light and is very good... The Czech food is good as well.

We ended the night by crossing Charles Bridge which was very neat to see at night due to the lights on the bridge and it had a magical feeling to it...

The next day Mike took me on a bike tour of the city and from the pictures it won't lool like we were in the middle of Praha but the city has incredible landscapes and parks within the city limits which was great! After the bike ride I spent the rest of the day wondering around the city and seeing the sights. Some of the popular sights I saw alongside a million other tourists were:

-Old Town
-New Town
-Wenceslas Square
-Praha Castle
-Monasteries and churches
- Franz Kafka's Cafe'
- the Dancing House designed by Frank Gehry
-The views along the Vltava River
-Astronomical Clock

I spent yesterday exploring the city some more. Praha is a very beautiful city with lots of culture and things going on, though it is more of a tourist destination than a spot where locals hangout. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed my visit to the city and would definitely return again in the future. Thanks to Mike and Lucy who were great hosts and tour guides!

Enjoy the pictures and Nastrovi (Cheers)!

Ein Prosit! (OKTOBERFEST)

Our Crew (Andre, Mike, Agnes, Me, Fräulein)

Having a "good time"...

Inside the Hippodrom

Our tent the "HIPPODROM", serving Spaten Beer

The Mecca for Beer Drinkers

Eine Mass + Zwei Mass = Happy Nathan

The carnival rides (just add beer and stay clear...)

What an experience! I can now die happy... I highly recommend visiting this great event at least once in your life if you can. If you can't attend, buy a lot of beer, get a lot of people and friends together, play good music and the rest will just happen...

So a brief summary, I am still processing it all myself...

The Wiesn (Oktoberfest) has 14 official beer tents that are owned or sponsored by certain famillies and/or breweries. We were in the Hippodrom, which is one of the smaller tents (seating for 3,200 people)and is known as the hip and VIP tent of the festival. Perfect for me...There was a great house band playing all types of music and every 20 mins the band would play "Ein Prosit" so I did a lot of singing. I attended the Wiesn with Mike (a high school classmate of my mother), Agnes (Mike's assistant)and Andre (a friend).

Beer is served in steins called Mass. One Mass is 1 liter. That's a lot of beer.... After a few Mass, you are ready to sing and dance (on the tables too if you'd like), which I did. When in Rome, I mean at the Wiesn...

It is really hard to describe the experience... I hope the pictures give you some more insight into OKTOBERFEST.

Eins, Zwei, Drei, g'Suffa!
PROST!

Berlin and Bavaria...

Guten tag! I think it's time for an update... Ja? Well, the last time I signed off I was heading to Berlin. What a great city! There is a lot happening there: a ton of history and a modern, hip, vibe that produces some great night life, or so I've been told...

It took me a day to get used to being on my own again after the wonderful stay with the Ahrens family. There son, Rüdiger, met me at the HauptBahnhof (main train station)in the city and was very helpful in helping me find a hostel and get my bearings in the city. He was also a great tour guide and knew a ton about Berlin. It was also great to see him again, the last time was 15 years ago... We both had changed a little. It was nice spending some time with him.

I spent five days and four nights in the city and still only scratched the surface of it... The monuments, museums, parks, and streets are numerous. The following is a summary of the highlights/sights from my visit:
-The Reichstag/Bundestag, which houses Germany's governing body
-Brandenburg Gate, symbol of Berlin and sometimes, Germany
- The Unter den Linden Street
- The Victory Monument (Siegessäule)for those of you who recall, this is where Obama gave his speech in Berlin a few months ago...
-The Berliner Dom (cathedral)
-Alexanderplatz
-Potsdamerplatz and the Sony Center
-The Memorial to the Murdered Jews
-Checkpoint Charlie
-The Documentation Center and Berlin Wall Memorial
-The location of Hitler's Bunker

Museums:
-The Pergamonmuseum, which houses the Pergamon Altar and one of the gates to the ancient city of Babylon (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World)
-The Alte (old) National Gallery
- The Gemäldegalerie, a great art museum with some incredible Northern Renaissance art
- and more...

I enjoyed navigating the city using the U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (rail),Bus, and of course by foot. Berlin has a laid-back feeling and pace, even more so than that of Paris. I enjoyed this aspect and the newly arrived Fall weather made everything just great!

Finally one last thing regarding Berlin: Peter instructed me to find an ice cream shop in Potsdamerplatz, so I did, and thanks to his generosity I enjoyed a Korant Becher ice cream. Peter, it was good and I can see why it is your favorite! Danke!

There is much more regarding Berlin but unfortunately for now, you will have to stick with the summary above... Pictures soon, I hope...

From Berlin I took a train south to Nürnberg (Nuremberg) and from there the S-Bahn to Schwabach where I met Roland and Susanne Funk. I am now in the part of Germany known as Bayern (Bavaria). I met Roland and Susanne at a hostel in Ireland and they were very kind and generous and extended an invitation to visit and stay with them if i made it to the Nürnberg area... Of course it was in my long-term travel plans and since I love home stay visits, it worked out well.

The stay with Roland and Susanne has been truly great! Again, I am very fortunate to experience German life first-hand and see places and things that most "tourists" don't get to see or experience. Just incredible...

Roland and Susanne have been great hosts and tour guides. In fact, Roland was a tour guide in Nürnberg for a company when he was in university... The Medieval part of the city of Nürnberg is very beautiful(it has been painstakingly reconstructed since the end of WWII, where it suffered heavy damage due to it being the headquarters of the Nazi Party). The another interesting part of the city that relates to the Nazis is the massive structures and architecture that were used for massive rallies. It was interesting to see such places and buildings in person, having only seen them in history books and archival film footage before.

Yesterday, I had a brief visit to a German school, as Susanne is a teacher, before heading to Dinkelsbühl, a small, walled, Medieval town that supposedly rivals Rothenberg in its charm and beauty. Dinkelsbühl was very beautiful and I enjoyed getting lost in the maze-like streets and exploring and following the inner and outer parts of the city's wall.

Again, this is all a very brief and a general summary of the past week or so. I can say that the hospitality, goodwill, and generosity I have experienced is overwhelming. I continue to learn about the culture, history, and of course, politics during my tours and conversations and over very delicious meals and beer tasting sessions... I am learning some of the language too, but unfortunately not enough to really survive alone... Speaking of language, I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors in the postings. At times it has been difficult to think, speak, and write in English!

Ok, what's ahead? Well the Wiesn', of course! The Wiesn is the German/Bavarian term for Oktoberfest in Munich. The festival started last Saturday on the 20th and runs through October 5th... I will be making my inaugural visit and appearance this Thursday and I am looking forward to it! I've learned quite a bit about it in the last few days (history and traditions of the fest) but I will wait to tell you about it all until after my visit. I'll leave you by saying that I have been practicing lifting steins filled with beer/bier ever since my arrival in Germany in preparation for this event and recently I have been practicing singing, Ein Prosit...!

Prost and Auf Wiedersehen!

On the Road Again...

Today Peter, Wiltrud, and I explored Cologne (KÖLN). Highlights included: The Roman-Germanic Museum showcasing Roman influences and artifacts found in the city; St. Maria in Capitol, a Norman style church; Lunch with bratwurst, potato salad and Kölsch (a style of beer only made in Köln); the Lindt Chocolate Musuem which was deadly...; a stroll along the Rhine River; and a visit to the famous Cologne Cathedral (Dom). A full but enjoyable day in pleasant autumn weather.

My time with the Ahrens Family in Odendorf has come to and end and I will be traveling to Berlin on Monday. I have really enjoyed the last week here in Odendorf touring the surrounding area. Peter and Wiltrud have been excellent hosts and guides and I can not thank them or repay them enough for their kindness, generosity, and wonderful hospitality. I was spoiled...

As Willie Nelson sang "On the road again..." and Bob Dylan added, "like a drifter without a home, like a dog with out a bone, like a rolling stone...," I am moving on and returning to the life of living out of a backpack and sleeping in hostels and trying to live on the cheap. It's a good thing because I was afraid I was becoming rather domesticated...

I will spend a few day in Berlin before heading to Nuremburg for a couple of days as well before meeting up with some friends near Munich (Munchen) for a visit to the "mecca" of beer drinking and good times, OKTOBERFEST in Munchen!!!

Living day by day and at times, hour by hour... Gotta love it!

Auf Wiedersehen,
NPL
